member involvement

While members have many opportunities and a variety of ways to participate in Impact Grants Chicago, there is no required time commitment. Members choose their level of participation. Some members simply like knowing that 100% of their donation will be put to good use in the community, others may want to participate in an occasional volunteer or education opportunity, while still others may want to be part of the review process to choose the finalists.

From attending educational events like Lunch and Learn and Impactful Conversations, to taking part in nonprofit volunteer opportunities, to joining a Grant or Financial Review Committee, Impact Grants Chicago provides a variety of opportunities for members to learn more about local nonprofits and to become knowledgeable philanthropists. Your level of involvement is up to you.
Involvement on a Grant Review or Financial Review Committee is one of the most rewarding aspects of the Impact Model. Below are some of the highlights of joining one of these committees.

Grant Review and Financial Review Committees

One of the unique aspects of the Impact Model is the opportunity for members to become involved in the actual vetting of the grant applications by serving on a Grant Review or Financial Review Committee. It is the role of these member committees to select the finalists who will present to the entire membership at the Grant Awards Celebration.

There are several Grant Review Committees each year (there will be eight in 2019-20), scheduled at various times and locations throughout the city in order to accommodate members’ schedules. The members of the Grant Review Committees meet five times between January and May and also attend site visits of selected organizations in April. No experience or expertise is required; training is provided at the first meeting and materials are available to explain each step in the process.
The Financial Review Committee members attend one training meeting in late January and begin their review work in late February. They attend one committee meeting in March and site visits in April. Financial statement analysis experience and working knowledge of Excel is preferred.

Sign-up for these committees takes place online in early January. More information will be provided to members by email at that time.
