While members have many opportunities and a variety of ways to participate in Impact Grants Chicago, there is no required time commitment. Members choose their level of participation. Some members simply like knowing that 100% of their donation will be put to good use in the community, others may want to participate in an educational opportunity, while still others may want to be part of the review process to choose the finalists.

From attending educational events like Lunch and Learn and Impactful Conversations to joining a Grant or Financial Review Committee, Impact Grants Chicago provides a variety of opportunities for members to learn more about local nonprofits and to become knowledgeable philanthropists. Your level of involvement is up to you.
Involvement on a Grant Review or Financial Review Committee is one of the most rewarding aspects of the Impact Model. Below are some of the highlights of joining one of these committees.

Grant Review and Financial Review Committees

One of the unique aspects of the Impact Model is the opportunity for members to become involved in the actual vetting of the grant applications by serving on a Grant Review or Financial Review Committee. It is the role of these member committees to select the finalists who will present to the entire membership at the Grant Awards Celebration.

There are eight Grant Review Committees in 2021/2022. Some GRCs are completely virtual, but most have a combination of virtual and in-person meetings. The committees are scheduled at various times to accommodate members’ schedules. The members of the Grant Review Committees meet four times between January and May and attend site visits of selected organizations in April. No experience or expertise is required; training is provided prior to the first meeting and materials are available to explain each step in the process.

There are also eight Financial Review Committees that work with the Grant Review Committees to make sure the nonprofits moving forward are financially sound. The members have one training meeting in early March and begin their review work mid-March. They attend one committee meeting and site visits in April. For 2021/2022, there will be an option to sign up for an all-virtual committee or one with some virtual and some in-person meetings. Financial statement analysis experience and working knowledge of Excel is required.

Sign-up for these committees takes place online in early January. More information will be provided to members by email at that time. Anyone planning to be on a Grant Review or Financial Review Committee must sign up to be a member and be paid in full by December 31, 2021.
